Project Redbug:

Revamping and rebranding an existing product for a new audience.

The problem is that adults are bored.

Source_TMZ45.jpg

We” relax” and “socialize” through social media which is harmful.

Why don’t adults have access to the same fun toys, like products from Hexbug, that kids do?

Market research, product testing and brand development:

Ideation:

I developed a game concept to go with the design, but decided I didn’t have time to develop it within the time constraints.

To this

I wanted to prototype a product without access to the programs, equipment or even materials I was used to. Could I create a product without the fancy facility?

After researching many different mediums, I landed on air dry clay as a cost effective, versatile and durable solution. There was very little information on using it for products, much less a speaker, so it was a lot of trial and error.

When it came time to sketch, I wanted to create a design that was as far from a box as possible. I also wanted to take full advantage of the pliable medium I was working with.

I’d created a clay set of jaws as an experiment while testing the clay, so I decided to go with teeth.

Final Design

The prototyping process was long and arduous because I was creating a product from a material no one had used for prototyping. I learned important disadvantages to the clay like it’s inability to take spray paint as well as it’s benefits like it’s reworkability and superb acoustic properties.

Bonus: Gender Reveal Dog Toys:

For many families, two life changing events that resulted from 2020 were dog adoptions and “Covid Babies”. Concept in progress.

(Note about the concept: This idea is based on market correlations and not my idea of how gender should be approached)

I didn’t expect such an unusual design to act as more than a side project, however, since finishing the prototype I’ve found some demand from it. Further development is needed.

Ultimately, I decided the designs where the “mother” toy was destroyed was too morbid, but I’ve included the designs here for the sake of showing the thought process.
