Cylinder Desk Lamp Sketches

This project shifted to another direction, never making it to the prototype phase, however I saved some of my favorite sketches for future development.

New Old Fashioned Ice Cube

The Problem:

Customers and mixologists love interesting garnishes in their drinks.

However, The traditional old fashioned leaves little room for innovation.

There aren’t many options for new and interesting ice cubes.

The Sketches:

I developed several ideas for a mold contraption, but ultimately determined that a typical two part ice mold would work fine from a practical standpoint.

Final Concept and Digital Model:

I wanted to evoke the idea of an orange peel, while maintaining an abstract form. The challenge would be creating a shape that fit the exact diameter of the cup so that it would separate the drink into layers of liquid sitting at different levels in the glass.

Prototyping:

After creating several printed iterations, I sanded it down, created a mold and cast the final model.

Final Model:

I was able to achieve the multi leveled liquid distribution in the final model. However I found during product testing that I would have to undersize the ice shape a little to accommodate minute differences in glasses.

In the end, I created a “garnish” that would be an unexpected surprise to guests while maintaining respect for tradition.
